OrangeBee Wins Ecotrophelia Portugal 2020

OrangeBee, a fermented preparation of aquafaba with a layer of orange jelly, sprinkled with bee pollen, is the product developed by two students from the University of Aveiro and the winner of the 4th edition of ECOTROPHELIA Portugal.

Promoted by Portugal Foods, the 2020 edition of the ECOTROPHELIA Portugal prize, promotes eco-innovation, entrepreneurship and competitiveness in the agrifood sector, challenging higher education students to develop innovative and sustainable food products. The competition involved 63 students from 14 universities. 16 teams participated in the contest, of which 10 innovative products reached the final.

The awards ceremony took place on 3rd September, in a ceremony that took place at Casa do Vinho Verde, in Porto. As in previous editions, Rui Sousa, CEO of Market Access, was a jury in the evaluation phase of the national competition.

The OrangeBee product was chosen by a jury, composed of several personalities from the agrifood sector, which were based on criteria such as product innovation, sustainability, packaging, organoleptic properties and market credibility.

The second place was awarded to Rice ‘n’ Nice, deep-frozen cod pastry, without potatoes, with cauliflower and by-products from the rice industry, developed by students from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto. The bronze was collected by students from the Instituto Superior de Agronomia of the University of Lisbon and from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. The group of students developed FermentiVe, which preserves green tomatoes rejected by the industry and other fermented vegetables, which also won the “Born from Knowledge” distinction, awarded by the National Innovation Agency (ANI).

OrangeBee, the winning team, was awarded with a monetary prize of 2,000 euros and about 7,000 euros in consultancy services: from Ivity Brand Corp, which will provide consultancy services in the areas of Communication and Design, from Market Access in Internationalization, and Patentree that will deal with the Intellectual Property related to the product.

The 4th national edition of the ECOTROPHELIA award was sponsored by the Portugal President of the Republic and had the support of APCER, the National Innovation Agency, the Porto City Council and TECMAIA. The prize was also supported by All The Way Travel, Brandit, Cerealis, CBS – Creative Building Solutions, Primor Group, Market Access, Novarroz, Patentree, SPI – Sociedade Portuguesa de Inovação and Vieira de Castro.
